Chaminade Day Camps: Q and A
Q. Is challenge camp only for full day campers?
A. No, a camper registering for challenge may attend as a mini or full day participant. The challenge camp is the accelerated section of the day camp.
Q.At the day camp, what is the difference between the morning and the afternoon?
A. During the afternoon we will do more large group activities and more shooting.. We will still play 3 vs. 3 games and we will add keep away and other types of play that may be as large as a full 11 vs 11. With the younger campers, our largest group size will generally be 6 vs. 6 with a rare full size game.
Q. How much swimming should we expect at the day camp?
A. In the morning only the youngest camper will swim, i.e. the 6 and 7 year olds, except that a older group which has only mini campers may get in the pool once toward the end of the week. In the afternoon, each group will usually swim once. Swimming lasts approximately twenty minutes.
Q Does a camper have to swim when his group is in the pool?
A. No. Sometimes a part of the group swims and those that prefer otherwise go to a movie. Other times, those that do not want to swim sit on the side with of the pool with the coaches.
Q. Do we still have to bring a swim suit if we are not generally swimming?
A. Yes, please. Our pool is inside. It is always possible to end up in the pool when we are working around heavy rain or if it is very hot. We will not swim if there is lightening.
Q. Does rain cause cancellation of the camp?
A. No the camp is not cancelled because of rain. Bring clothes that you do not mind getting muddy. We will play outside if it possible. If it is not possible we will use parking lots, classrooms, the pool, the lunchroom. In our 14 years we have experienced type of weather.
Q. What type of supervision do you provide and what is the staff camper ratio?A. All activities on and off the field are supervised by the staff. Camp boundaries are spelled out to all campers. Staff is present from drop off to pick up. Our ratio varies depending on the age group. With the youngest groups we have about a 6 to 1 ratio. Now with the youngest we employ junior counselors. They serve a vital role. The junior counselors will help the kids find their possessions, walk them to the bathroom, sit with them when they need support which frees up the coaches to run the group and teach the game.
Q. What type of campers attend camp?
A.The day camp is for beginners through the serious and dedicated players. Campers are separated by gender, age and ability. Our camp numbers are large enough that we can run leagues and have competitive groups in all ages and in all sections of the camp.
Q. Can friends stay together?
A. Friends are kept together so long as it it works with age and gender. If one of the friends is way better than the rest of the group we will try to work that out with the campers and the parents. With the youngest we guarantee the friends of the same gender will be together.
Q. Do you provide evaluations for the campers?A. No we do not provide evaluations at the day camp.
